Multiple Shoutboxes
« on: June 14, 2010, 05:36:03 PM »
With the shoutbox, do you think it's possible to have more than one shoutbox? It would be nice to have the option to make different shoutbox's with different shouts. Useful for different layouts.

On some sites with products or schooling, they have shoutbox's that say "Here what people are saying about this product" [shoutbox]. It would be nice to have this in DP as well by simply allowing different shoutboxs. Then could by done by having a default shoutbox, then if you modify it there would be an option to make it show it's own shouts or something.

That is possible and you are able to do so right now by cloning the module. Making it work was a HUGE headache but I know it will pay off.

hrmm...

I don't know what you mean by I'm able to do that right now by cloning it. You mean in module management or cloning code-wise.

Go to the section where you manage modules. Click the Clone link in the box for the shoutbox.. It willl duplicate itself. No coding necessary.

hrmmm, seems to be some confusion here, or a bug. Not sure which...

I can clone a shoutbox, but it shows the shouts from the default shoutbox. I changed the title, but it's 2 shoutboxes showing the same shouts on a default layout.

On a custom layout, I cloned the shoutbox and have it a different title. I put in clone shoutbox in the layout and disabled the default shoutbox. They all show the same shouts. Maybe I misunderstood. I thought you were saying you could have different shoutboxes with different shouts in it.

Ok,  I see what's happening.

You can have different shoutboxes with different shouts. However, when you clone the shoutbox, it's still going to show all the default shoutboxes shouts first. Anything you shout into the clone after that only appears in that clone.

I tried cloning the shoutbox without having any shouts in to start with, but it didn't happen. I cloned it, changed title, then put it in the layout. It still showed all the default shouts made.

Also, if you have 2 shoutboxes with different titles in a layout and type something into the default one, it appears in the clone. Nothing else can go into the default. So you only use one shoutbox per layout. While this isn't a bug, we should write some documentation on this, as this will be a common support question after public release.

I also had the same problem. Plus it would be great to be able to delete shouts if needed.

Ok, I have tested and tested. This does not work. You cannot have multiple shoutboxes with different shouts.

- default shoutbox on default layout.

- cloned shoutbox renamed shoutbox2000 on custom layout. (default disabled on custom layout)

Both boxes show same shouts. Is this a bug? Or am I still not doing it right?

I reloaded DP again from scratch, then noticed cloning needs to be done prior to using the original module. I haven't checked yet but would assume all the modules that are cloned after they have been used will also clone any changes that were made to the original.
Not a fix....just pointing it out.

This should be put in the bugtracker I would think.

In the shoutbox settings, under Shoutbox template to use, you'll see a drop down box showing each separate shoutbox. By default, you see one item. To add one, click the (more) link and type in its name. I typed test. Click Save. Now, back to the aforementioned  box, you see a second item once clicked. Choose it and click Save. Does this help? And did I confuse the living daylights out of you?

Thanks DS.

Ok it works but without refresh, i have to reload the page to see shout. And it seems rather glitchy...like 3 or 4 shoutboxes appear then disappear, then all looks good again.

Yeah there's why there were errors in the logs, it did not refresh properly as should using templates shoutboxs

When cloning shoutbox and use the same template the default does not refresh.
