Layouts and Forum Speed
« on: January 31, 2012, 07:44:35 PM »
I have a question, if I had 300+ boards I know that would slow down site speed a bit. How much more of an impact would it add to my site if I also added a different layout for each of those boards? Would it be a little, so-so, or drastically it slow it down?

I'm not speaking hypothetically, this may actually become a reality and I need to know if the result will be worth the effort.

Honestly, it would probably slow your forum down a bit, cause it grabs the layout from the database.  Still, I don't expect it to slow it down much, I would assume less than what SMF is already doing to your forum with 300+ boards.

In any case, Layouts were not designed that way, they were envisioned so that you can apply more than 1 page of your SMF forum to a layout.  Layouts were created to kinda simplify multiple pages that contain the same structure and modules.

Honestly, I couldn't imagine a forum needing anymore than 25 layouts MAX, but to each their own...

Do you think it would be more efficient for me to have a mod made that gives a little textarea below board description where I can input php? Versus making layouts for each and every board with a custom php module in it?

I suppose it's up to you.  But yes, in this case, I believe it would be more appropriate.
